Bioinnovation

Turning Organic Waste Into Protein, Fertiliser, and Opportunity

Prime Maggot Farm & Products, led by our Technical Director Tareeq Mangachi, applies black soldier fly bioconversion to divert organic waste into high-value protein, organic fertiliser, and a genuinely circular business model, recognised nationally as one of Tanzania's leading eco-innovations.

A Sister Venture

Where monitoring meets making

Prime Environmental Consultancy measures and monitors environmental change from above: satellite, drone, and field instrumentation. Prime Maggot Farm & Products, led by our own Technical Director, Tareeq Mangachi, works the same problem from the ground up: breeding black soldier flies (Hermetia illucens) to convert organic waste into high-protein feed, organic fertiliser, and a working model for circular, low-waste production.

It's an independent venture, not a PEC service line, but it shares the conviction that drives our monitoring work: that credible, evidence-based practice, applied consistently, is what actually moves the needle on environmental outcomes in Tanzania.

National Recognition

Recognised as an Eco-Innovator by the Tanzania National Chamber of Commerce

In February 2026, the Tanzania National Chamber of Commerce (TNCC) recognised Prime Maggot Farm as one of three outstanding Eco-Innovators at the launch of the TNCC Environment and Climate Change Policy, held 16 January 2026, an acknowledgement of practical, scalable environmental innovation from the Tanzanian private sector.

"Your innovative efforts and demonstrated commitment to environmental sustainability exemplify the leadership that the private sector must embrace in today's rapidly changing world."

The Science

Why the black soldier fly?

Hermetia illucens isn't a pest species. It's one of the most efficient organic-waste converters in nature, and a growing pillar of circular, low-carbon agriculture worldwide.

Waste Valorisation

Larvae consume food and organic waste that would otherwise rot in landfill and release methane, turning a disposal problem into a production input.

High-Value Protein

BSF larvae run roughly 40–45% protein and are rich in fat, a strong, sustainable substitute for fishmeal and soymeal in poultry, fish, and livestock feed.

Natural Fertiliser

Larval castings, known as frass, are a nutrient-rich organic soil amendment, closing the loop between waste input and agricultural output.

Not a Pest Species

Adult black soldier flies don't bite, sting, or carry disease. They don't even feed. They live briefly on larval fat reserves purely to mate and lay eggs.

Life Cycle

From egg to adult in about a month

The black soldier fly's life cycle is short, efficient, and built around a single voracious feeding stage, the larva, that does all the waste-conversion work.

Cluster of black soldier fly eggs

Egg

~4 days

Adult females lay clusters of 500–900 eggs in cracks and crevices near decaying organic matter, close to a future food source.

Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) at different sizes

Larva (BSFL)

2–4 weeks

The feeding stage, and the one that matters most. Larvae eat voraciously, growing through several moults and converting organic waste into body mass at a remarkable rate.

Black soldier fly prepupae, darkened and no longer feeding

Prepupa

~1–2 weeks

Feeding stops. Larvae darken, migrate away from the food source, and prepare to pupate. Fat content peaks here, the ideal harvest point for feed products.

Black soldier fly pupae encased in hardened larval skin

Pupa

1–2 weeks

Encased in its hardened last larval skin, the insect undergoes metamorphosis: no feeding, minimal movement, complete internal transformation.

Adult black soldier fly

Adult Fly

5–8 days

The adult emerges, mates, and lays the next generation of eggs, living briefly on fat reserves from the larval stage before the cycle begins again.

Products & Services
